3 and 4 Point Editing

Can-Dive wrote on 4/16/2025, 11:23 PM

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Typically, the range I select on the timeline is shorter in duration than the video clip I have selected in the Media Pool. If I select an in and out point in the Source monitor (4 point edit) the speed of the clip is adjusted when it is moved to the timeline using the Overwrite button. Because my Program range is shorter than my Source range, the video runs faster. This is as expected.

In a 3 point edit, I set a range on the Timeline (Program Monitor) and in the Source monitor I select only the begin point. Rather than trim the Source video to fit the timeline range, the program will adjust the speed of the video to fit the range in the same fashion as a 4 point edit. For a 3 point edit I want the system to trim the clip rather than adjust its speed.

@Can-Dive

Hi,

For 3-point editing, you have to do exactly as instructed, nothing more. Unfortunately, the manual doesn’t tell you what not to do.

Place the playback marker in the source monitor where you want the start. Do not click on the range IN button. Thus, no range should be showing. Overwrite.

If a range is set using the IN button, you get 4-point editing and a speed effect.

However, if you set only the OUT button for a range, you get 3-point editing.

So, for 3-point editing, do not use the range IN button.

It took me quite a while to figure out what I was doing wrong.

@Can-Dive

Hi,

Before I forget, in a similar context, @Gid asked if there was a function to overwrite or exchange an object on the timeline. As you have seen, 3 and 4 point editing does this for videos. However, if you just have a photo on the timeline of any duration and you want to replace it, under Import, use Swap, not Overwrite. The photo will be replaced with one the same length, The problem is that if the photo on the timeline has any effects, they will be lost. In this case, use copy effects, then Swap, then paste effects to the replace photo.

If you want to exchange a video that is on the timeline by a photo, then swap will replace the entire duration with the photo taking on the same duration.

@browj2 Hi, yeah sorry I should have refined that question, I'm aware of the Swap & Overwrite function as MMS also has those & replacing photos is fairly easy but I always found it a bit fiddly for videos. setting the range isn't always easy, you have to manually position it, chapter markers make this a bit easier but chapters don't quite get transitions right. sods law says the marker will be the wrong side of the transition & dragging the range ends don't snap to markers or the ends of objects, not for me anyway. (It does sort of snap but it's not easy to work out if it's snapping to frames or the end of objects)

By the time you've clicked here n there on the markers moving the cursor using the [ ] or trying to drag the range to fit etc. it's almost just as easy to drag the replacement to another track, trim it n insert it manually.

I'm not trying to be critical because anything I don't like I get chastised about but as you say in the past 'It took me quite a while to figure out' & any effects get lost in this swap, I was hoping that VPX had an easier solution as it has the Project folder option/window. I was thinking maybe there was a simple select timeline object & replace option.

VPX does work better than MMS, here's a little video of using Overwrite in MMS, there's no 'video running faster', ie it doesn't stretch to fit (It does stretch in VPX 🤷‍♂️), doesn't matter if I choose Adjust or Don't adjust.

Hi,

(Forgive me, I'm asking a "simple" question and I believe it's also related to editing points)

1- I selected the interval of a video in the "monitor program". I know that I can "drag" the selected content to the timeline where it is positioned.

2- The timeline is positioned at time 3 seconds.

3- Is there a button or even a line command that I can press to transfer the selected interval exactly to this indicated position? (or just by dragging?) See, this question has to do with large projects with many tracks, requiring a lot of care to simply "drag" and avoid some accidents!

Thanks!

I don't know if this would be the answer:
1- I select the interval in the monitor program
2- I click on the video in the monitor program (Is this essential? I don't know if it is or not because the image is displayed on the monitor, but I suspect that in some cases everything was transferred and not just the video interval)
3- I press the "[x]" overwrite button on the timeline bar
4- the selected interval will be inserted exactly at the needle position on the timeline of the selected/highlighted track

@Gid

Quick answer to your comment about selecting the beginning/ending of a transition - try Alt+Q and Alt+W, the I to set the in point of a range, O the out point.

As for your comment about fiddly for videos, there should be an easier way to swap out a video, replacing it with either the same duration if the incoming clip is longer, or shorter if the incoming clip is shorter. The 3-point method is fine for a range that is different from the duration of the video being replaced, but not for just swapping out a video. Magix should take a look at this. We need a new feature I think.

@Roberto-Goncalves

Hi Roberto,

A couple of things.

The monitor at the left is the Program Monitor (what is on the timeline), the monitor at the right is the Source Monitor (in your case, a preview of what is double-clicked or selected under Import).

For some reason, your image is not showing the shortcuts for the various import methods. You should see this:

Take note of the shortcuts - these are at the top of the keyboard, not numbers on the keypad.

You are showing that you want to import to track 1 beyond the end of the last object. If you just select a video in the Media Pool Import and press 1 or the import (automatic) button or the insert arrow on the video clip without previewing the video, the clip will be inserted at the playback marker. However, if you preview the video in the source monitor, with or without a range, then press 1 or import (automatic) button, the video will be placed at the end of the timeline, not at the playback marker.

If you preview the video in the source monitor, with or without a range, then press 2 (single track ripple), or 3 (multitrack ripple) or 5 (overwrite) or use the Import buttons for Single track ripple, multitrack ripple, or overwrite, the video will be placed at the playback marker.

The important thing is to understand what happens when you import to somewhere within the objects on the timeline, even to a blank space that you have created. I suggest that you try this out with the various import modes.

Keep in mind that shortcut 4, swap or exchange, requires an object on the timeline to be selected. No selection, nothing happens. If you have something selected but you don't see it, you could end up inadvertently swapping the wrong object.

@Gid

Looking at exchanging a video clip again, instead of the 3-point editing method with an in/out range selected and the playback marker on the in point (no range) of the source video, then overwriting to get just the same duration, no speed change, I think that it would be better to have a second mode for swap. Creating a range just for a video clip should not be necessary.

Thus Magix could have this: select a video clip on the timeline, double-click the video to be imported. Leave the playback marker at the beginning or anywhere along the clip, no range set, and use Swap instead of Overwrite. This would exchange the clip for a new one with the same duration.

To get the way it currently works, either do not preview the clip and then select Swap, or create a range in the Source Monitor, then Swap, which will exchange the clip on the timeline with entire selected clip or the range of the selected clip. The new clip will usually have a different duration, as is the present case. Or something simpler.

Alternatively, there should be a command to put a range over a just a selected object. I can't find one.

@browj2 Hi, yep it would be nice to have a simple swap option,. In the past I have gone to use this but got frustrated that I couldn't work it out or get the result I expected, I now see that I get a different result in VPX, a more correct result, so maybe it wasn't me maybe it was MMS screwing with me, but then again as we know sometimes the same function operates differently in the two programs, so maybe it was me 🤷‍♂️🙃😂

Hi @browj2

Tks!

well placed these "numbers of the alphanumeric part of the keyboard"! But in the popup menu, these numbers do not appear or Is there any setting for them to be displayed? (I know they are displayed if you hover the mouse over the button that is set)
