SUMMERTIME
The Origin:
"Summertime" is from the opera "Porgy and Bess" written in 1935 by the American composer Georges Gershwin (1898 - 1937). The lyrics are from DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin. The action takes place at Catfish Row, a black neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina. In the opera, which is largely devoted to blues and spirituals, "Summertime" is a lullaby. Other famous works by the same composer: "Rhapsody in blue", "An Américan in Paris".
The Form:
The original form is simple, it alternates two verses of sixteen measures in the tone of the minor.
