Debussy's piano music can be divided into two distinct groups: one contains the works of his youth, and the other those that characterize his maturity. These groups are separated by years of activity directed in various senses. The Petite Suite, composed in the year of its Prix de Rome, is simple and unpretentious, a pleasant music, properly written, but far from the one he will write later. The first little pieces, especially "Rêverie", "Danse", and "La Ballade", are spicy and graceful, but they contain more than one commonplace, and their harmony borders on extreme simplicity: it is only an essay. On the other hand, the Suite dating from 1890, suggests a rearrangement later, as it is ahead of the contemporary works of the same author. Published in 1905, it recognizes certain parts dating from the year of its composition, next to details of style, harmony, defacture, which will not manifest until later.
