Subtitles without using titles? Blu-ray authoring...

I have seen a few posts about subtitles. Most talk about using titles, but I want to turn them on/off like on a store bought disc. I don't want to have two separate movies on the disc as I don't think I'll have room - i.e. one movie is slightly more than half the disc size.

I'm pretty sure commercial discs just use text files that include the words to display and timing information on when to display them. Can we create these in VPX? I don't see it in the documentation anywhere, if so. Alternatively, can we include such files in the disc authoring process somehow, if we use a third-party application to create them? Any recommendations for a subtitle app?

vpx doesn't natively support subtitles. You would need various other programs to put it all together.

- a program to create the subtitling e.g. subtitle edit (free) http://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit/ There are many others, there are also many formats in which subtitles can be stored.

- If you want to burn dvd's you will need software which can generate images from the subtitle files and mux these into the vob files of the dvd. If you want to play the file from a usb stick you might make a mkv file and mux the subtitle file into it. That might be a bit easier. And if you just want to play it from a pc you may also use a softwareplayer like vlc which can read the subtitle files and display the text directly while playing back the movie. No need to mux the subtitle into the video file. The easiest option by far and a good way to test your subtitle files.

It will require quit a bit of research and creating subtitles is an awfull lot of work anyway, but I would recommend to take a look on the doom9 forum. http://forum.doom9.net/index.php. Lot's of information there on how to work with subtitles. Many are just ripping dvd's and dropping or copying over existing subtitles, but you can also find how to make your own.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was afraid of that - i.e. VPX doesn't handle them. I burn to Blu-ray, so I suppose I'll have to figure that all out.

I see on Subtitle Edit's web site they list compatible formats and list Sony DVD Architect. Does that mean Vegas Pro (the ones including DVD Architect) can produce subtitles from within, with no need of third party apps? If so, perhaps a cross-grade is in order. I inquired a while back and Magix was amenable to such. But I recently upgraded VPX, so maybe next year. :)

Thanks again.

Humble Bundle - get Vegas 14 Pro Edit now for 20$, then worry about subtitles.
