MMS 2025 Suite - BCC Boris FX Chroma Key Studio

Clinton-Peck Posté à 17/06/2024 10:41

I am considering upgrading MMS 2024 Platinum to MMS 2025 Suite for the BCC Boris FX Chroma Key Studio.
Question 1: It does appear to be quite complex compared to MMS chroma key and NewBlue, so will it be worth it?
Question 2: Can it also be used in other video editing programs?

@Clinton-Peck Hi, it's hard to say whether it's worth it to you, & yes it is a bit more complex, that's just a learning curve & there's videos of it on the Boris website where it used in other software but the majority of the controls should be the same, you'll just have to reinterpret them for MMS 2025, The bottom 6 in this list look like Chroma Key Studio, (any with Primatte in the title aren't the same) https://borisfx.com/search/?web%5Bquery%5D=chroma%20key%20studio&web%5BrefinementList%5D%5Bsection%5D%5B0%5D=videos

I somehow doubt they will work in other programs, I could be wrong but someone else will have to answer that as I have the full Boris suite that does show in other programs. I didn't upgrade to MMS 2025 Suite as I already have all those plugins so I just chose Platinum.

-------------------

This is just a very quick key I made of this clip, you can see the green screen isn't a uniformed green colour but BCC Chroma Key Studio can be tweaked to correct for that & there's further tweaking that can be done 👍

-----------------------------

I must add my version of Chroma Key Studio is in the latest Boris Continuum package 2024, I don't know which version is in that Magix Suite package.

This is that quick key I did

@Clinton-Peck For the green bit on his T-shirt that gets keyed out I added another copy of the clip then Sectioned just that part to use it as an overlay.

I was wondering how you got around that. Watching the videos now, it's quite impressive.

Gid Posté à 17/06/2024 13:31

@Clinton-Peck 👍In those videos there may be bits that can't be done in MMS, like compositing.

In MMS you have to as I did section an area & use it as an overlay or create a B/W mask & use it with a duplicate of the clip in a similar way, animating this mask isn't impossible but is a bit tricky as it's a single image or images, Chroma key studio does have a built in masking option but playing with it I found it a bit hard to control as there's no on-screen widgets to shape it or position it, just the Points that are in 100s so adjusting is a bit of guesswork, 🤔

I've chosen Egg Shaped here, you can see the oval green screen showing behind him, the blue is the background that's showing because of the chromakey

I use Primatte studio in Vegas so I'm not 100% familiar with Chroma Key Studio, I think Boris may have moved on & put their efforts into Primatte, that's maybe why it's been offered in the Magix Suite. In Vegas with Primatte I can add Mocha masks & track it to follow whatever I'm masking on screen, this doesn't work in MMS,

Light wrap only works as a solid colour in MMS because that program can't see the tracks below. You'll get this msg if you don't choose Solid colour, MMS doesn't do compositing.

Light wrap will use the image behind to put a colour on the edge instead of a green halo that green screens can create, in Vegas in compositing mode it will use the colour of the picture behind, so for instance in my video the edges of his head & shoulders will have a slight blue/white to them from the sky & clouds, the lower part of his body will have a sand colour. but in MMS you'd have to choose one colour, maybe blue, black or sand/cream & this colour would be all around the edges of his whole outline so that would be a juggle as to what looks best.

But despite the negatives it's still a good plugin & a big step up from the default MMS chroma key option 👍

@Clinton-Peck, @Gid

Hi

. . . . But despite the negatives it's still a good plugin & a big step up from the default MMS chroma key option . . .

IMHO Yes and 'maybe', the components like Outside mask, Matte adjustment, Light spill etc are very useful and missing in the Magix Chromakey effect.

However, after doing a load of testing following the BCC tutorial to the letter in order of usage, I found on some video clips, such as the example image from one of them below, it starts to choke up quickly, eventually grinds to a halt and sometimes crashes. When it did not crash the result was 'not good' for this particular clip especially in the areas of the 'wrap' as it blows in the breeze.

In minutes in MMS 2025 using the Magix Chromakey effect, I can get the example shown below, it is not perfect, particularly with the hair, however the wrap is dealt with very well.

If the Magix Chromakey control had the 'missing items' I mentioned above, then who knows.....

@johnebaker Hi, In the 5sec FHD clip I was using I had to turn on the lightening symbol to Reduce resolution & I prerendered the timeline to make it play which took a little while, I didn't time it but maybe 20secs 🤷‍♂️ I didn't get crashes but on a lesser machine I'm sure it would.

Would you share that video, in a PM if you wish?

This is what that clip does to my CPU, this hasn't been prerendered

Remove this if you want

@johnebaker Hi, yep it's a pretty good fx, I tested that first just to see what the other fxs were up against, with more testing (experience 😂) I could maybe get it a bit better.

It'll be the latest version in Continuum 2024, I don't think Primatte has changed much since the earlier versions tho, they may have updated bits (The added Mocha Pro masking gets improved upon quite regularly & then other fxs that inc that get updated accordingly but I didn't use it in this) or they've removed bugs etc..

I only used some of the basic functions, Auto Analyze does a good job to get started, then Clean Foreground noise to refine the matte, Secondary spill removes a lot of the green bleeding, & a bit of Colour correction - the hair goes a bit red, I'm not sure about that so I just colour corrected it.

Hi

What an improvement 👍, the Primatte interface looks almost identical to the BCC chromakey,

I need to do more testing/learning and getting the GPU combination right.
