Many effects aren't working. Movie Templates causing program crash.

Deltani escrito el 09.10.AM a las 03:19 horas

Hello, I've recently purchased MEP-premium, I'm new to video editing so have been following the tutorials on this website and trying a few things myself. I've spent a good few frustrated hours trying to get effects to work on a .mp4 file, tried converting it to .avi and also tried on clip _009.mxv from the downloaded demo; but I can't get most of the effects to work... for example brightness / contrast, color, color correction have no effect - the file / clip is selected, the effect is checked under the media pool window, but the effect isn't happening. Old movie, tv strip, feature film and negative (under general options effects) do work, but that's about it. I've compared what I'm doing with what I've watched on the tutorials and as far as I can see, I'm following the steps correctly.

None of the Movie Templates will load, they cause an instant program crash - the report states:

Error in module "libGLESv2.dll" (Load address: 0x00007FFEBF4A0000) to address 0x00007FFEBF63B656 (Exception 0xc0000005 "ACCESS_VIOLATION")

in all cases. Probably not related to the effects problem. I tried uninstalling / reinstalling but the issue persists.

I'm running on a 32GB, i7-107050H CPU with Nvidia RTX 2080 Super MaxQ Laptop (Windows 10, 64bit)

all files were installed in the default directories and all additional files have been installed ok.

I'd appreciate any help you can give, or would I be better contacting support directly?

Hi,

That's a lot of stuff. We can't see your screen and we don't know what material that you're working with. Let's start with a basic thing. Is the blue lighting bolt at the bottom right of the Preview Monitor turned on? If so, right-click on it and look at what is turned on or off.

Next, what is the source of the mp4 file? Give us the listing from MediaInfo (do a search here for other examples).

Hi Delnanti.

The problem may well be your Intel Processor graphics chip. It's possible Movie Edit Pro can't make use of it.

Read the Intel article here.

And about your Intel CPUs GPU here.

You should first try opening MEP and going to file / program / Settings / Import/Export and untick Hardware acceleration for playback if possible and Hardware encoding during export where possible, and see if the errors keep occurring.

Hi John,

Initially, I didn't have the lightning bolt visible, but I've since realised that changing the size of the preview monitor affects what buttons are displayed or I can also select all options from the menu (performance for the lightning bolt options). Anyway, I found all 3 menu choices were selected.. reduce resolution, reduce frame rate and deactivate effects... having now unselected them, I'll immediately use effect filters to change my hair colour to blond! Doh!

Thank you so much for a quick reply and solution to the effects issue. As the issue has now resolved I haven't investigated the mediainfo listing - it was affecting all project files anyway.. not just .mp4.

The movie templates issue remains, I've sent the crash reports through to support although I don't expect to get a direct response to those, if no one here knows of a solution (as it looks like an issue with libGLESv2.dll), I'll wait a month to see if an update is released, if not I'll contact support.

Thanks again for your help, sorry the effects issue was such a basic fault on my part.

@Deltani

Specifically for your "libGLESv2.dll" error you might like to look at this page. It appears that this is a Windows component file so not a problem with MEP itself, it would seem!

Various solutions are suggested on that page; I cannot and will not vouch for any or all of them so if you decide that a "repair" is warranted I would strongly recommend creating a Restore Point before you begin!

Hi and welcome to the forum

From the comment by @CubeAce

. . . . The problem may well be your Intel Processor graphics chip. It's possible Movie Edit Pro can't make use of it. . . .

It is quite possible that, as this is a laptop with a RTX 2080, the Intel iGPU is disabled hence the error you are getting, you may be able to enable it in the BIOS, however there is no guarantee this will work as the iGPU normally needs a monitor plugged into it as well to activate it.

Also do be aware that if this is the case, then Movie Edit Pro (MEP) can only use the RTX 2080 for Preview hardware acceleration (HWA) only. There will be no HWA for available for exporting to AVCHD, MP4 and HEVC file formats.

Hi Ray / CubeAce,

I already tried deselecting both of the hardware acceleration options but the Movie Templates issue remains.. I've also checked that the program is set to run using the Nvidia graphics card by default.

Thanks for your thoughts and reaching out.

Hi Jeff / emmrecs,

A quick search of the file shows I have many instances of libGLESv2.dll installed in various directories on my laptop, including 5 in various Magix directories (Music Maker, Travel Maps, MEP premium/2021, Magix Services/Update Notifier and Magix Services/MxCloudSync). They're all different sizes and have different last modified dates. I'm guessing the issue would be with the one in MEP premium/2021 which is 4.43Mb last modified 18/08/20. There doesn't appear to be a similar version listed on the webpage you linked, although I'll try a couple after I've taken the necessary precautions.

Thanks for your thoughts and reaching out.

Hi John / johnebaker,

To be honest my understanding of computers is rudimentary at best.. I realise that configurations of hardware on different platforms are many and varied.. it's one of the reasons I chose a laptop.. everything is prebuilt, tested and almost standard.. right? I haven't made any changes to the bios and am loath to delve into that pit of uncertainty if I can help it, especially not knowing / experimenting to see if that is the cause of the issue.

Surely, being a laptop with default configuration shouldn't present such issues? Having said that, if other users aren't experiencing the same problems, it does point a finger at my particular setup.

I'm wondering too, if HWA is likely to be the issue - you say that 'There will be no HWA for available for exporting to AVCHD, MP4 and HEVC file formats'.. I haven't got to that stage yet.. the selecting from Movie Templates issue crashes the program before I've loaded any video files.. (I haven't gotten to exporting yet). Or were you thinking about the previous effects problem?

Thanks for your thoughts and reaching out.

CubeAce escrito el 09.10.PM a las 12:09 horas

@Deltani

Hi Deltani.

I'm not sure what John or the others are thinking but you are basically correct but also a bit wrong.

A prebuilt machine should be standard and tested but still not suitable for certain applications which is why producers of programs have minimum specification guides for their software. On top of that is the configuration of the hardware which as John pointed out, the Intel Graphics processor may be turned off in your bios because you have a much more powerful nvidia graphics chipset in your laptop.

That may present a problem we are not aware of and it may be the MAGIX staff have better solutions than we can come up with. At this point it is difficult to tell.

You say you have ensured that the nvidia card is set to run by default. That could also be a problem but I'm not sure at this stage.

If the Windows problem can be sorted (or needs to be sorted) and you still have problems you could try looking at the following.

I think you just need to get MEP working first without any Hard-Ware Acceleration enabled. One step at a time as it were. Meaning trying not to use the nvidia card at this stage. Hence my request earlier not to have the two HWA boxes ticked.

[Edit]

At this point I'm happy for John or any of the others to correct anything I've said. They are more experienced than me at this but I'm asking myself how I would go about fault finding with this problem.

Ray.

Hi Ray / CubeAce,

I'd like to point out that everything (or at least everything I've tried so far) within MEP now seems to be working except for the Movie Templates causing the program to crash when attempting to load them (they preview fine from the media pool). These are the Media Pool/Templates > Editing templates Basic and Film templates Basic. When trying to load one from the presented button it starts to unzip and then crash MEP. I've subsequently noticed that some of them successfully unzipped and installed into the MEP premium file directory.. I can then choose the Import tab and select the .mvp file and load that for the older projects (directories are prefixed by year '2014' or '2016' on what I've tested so far) If the project has multiple .mvp files though, I would have to rename the project and work on it separately (maybe that's as it should be - I have no experience of working with these). The presumably newer templates that have unzipped (no year prefix on the install directory) i.e. 'drama', adventure', 'filmnoir', 'blockbuster' etc. still crash out MEP when loading the .mvp files directly.

Thanks for offering that possible solution. So, based on that, I've tried a few things and quite a lot of permutations of the various options.. always closing MEP and restarting after changing any of the File/Settings/Program > Display Options settings, but all fail to solve the Movie Template issue.

I've set the integrated graphics card to run MEP by default (does this suggest it isn't turned off in the bios?), within MEP I've changed the Display Options you suggested (Device is blank with nothing to select. Under 'Preview in arranger' I've tried standard mode, compatibility mode, Nvidia graphics, integrated graphics (yes there is an option for it here despite not being listed as Device above) and Microsoft Basic render Driver. I've also used both output to high bit depth, dithering or none. However the problem persists with all permutations of those options.

Thanks again for your assistance (and all the other responders).. I appreciate that those lengthy replies and thought processes are quite time consuming.

Hi Delanti.

I wasn't aware you had effects from previous versions and certainly they are from before I started using MEP.

I think John EB and the others may have to step in here as it's before my time but the one thought that occurs to me is the bits that are crashing may no longer be compatible with the current version of MEP or indeed Win 10.

This is why I've copied in the others to this reply to see if I'm correct.

As to the Intel GPU turning up, yes that means it must be enabled in the bios and obviously MEP has detected it.

Again, whether this is a help or hindrance I could not comment on with confidence.

Hopefully one of the others can help with answers now we have a more clear picture of what is going on.

Hi Ray / CubeAce,

I have effects from previous versions? I didn't know.. I have Movie Edit Pro MX Plus from 2012 and Movie Edit Pro 2015 registered to me.. I got these free as promotions on prior hardware purchases, but never got round to using them much and have never installed them on my current laptop, they got me an upgrade discount on the current version though!

I thought all the effects / templates were from the premium version of MEP.. the additional files were a considerable download. I also have Designer Pro x9 and Photo & Graphic Designer 2018 installed, I wonder if elements from those have made their way in to MEP? I installed those after MEP to edit animations.

I Don't know if they are from previous versions or not. Just going by the dates on the screen grab you gave.

Then I noticed you seem to be using 'Import' as opposed to 'Templates' where you should be accessing them from. That's a bit unconventional from my way of using MEP.

I don't even recognise the folder you seem to be using or how you are saving projects.

If I go to the folder you have opened which I think is c\ Users\ (your name\ MAGIX\ Common\ Video content\ Movie Edit Pro Premium. This is the file system I find and not what you are showing.

Really, only try to get to effects by using the Templates section.

Unless you were just trying to show the problem files but accessing them via MEP is a bit risky IMHO.

Hi Ray, John and everyone else that has an interest,

I was just showing the folders that had installed after trying to launch from the templates tab. It was launching from the templates tab that was causing the program crashes. It was just a by the by that I could import a .mvp file from the directory that had been installed as a possible work round the crashes.

However, I took John's advice and went to raise a support ticket.. As I was writing what the issue was, various pop up possible solutions presented.. one of which was this:

Reset the software to default

Close the program.

Now press CTRL+SHIFT while launching the application.

Continue to hold the CTRL & SHIFT keys until the program is loaded. In newer programs, you will see a window that asks "Do you want to reset all preferences to default values?"

Place a checkmark next to "Delete all cached application data" and then click Yes.

In current versions of Movie Studio and Vegas, go to Options -> Preferences -> Video (tab) and turn GPU acceleration of video processing OFF.

Close and restart the application to apply the change.

So I did that launch with CTRL + Shift but didn't get the window presenting with an option to reset all preferences to default. I had a look around and found it under File/Settings. I closed and restarted. When loaded I first noticed the layout of all the windows had changed (they looked cleaner, as in more efficiently using the screen display area). I proceeded to the Templates tab, and wow! the issue is resolved.. all the templates now load in without issue. I had one fail.. frozen screen crash when loading 'otherland' template, but all subsequent loadings of that template have succeeded.

I have no idea what could have caused the issue in the first place.. I don't go around changing parameters willy nilly and an uninstall / reinstall didn't solve the problem. (I've just looked and both HWA boxes in the import / export settings are checked - so that doesn't appear to have been the issue either).

But hey ho! it's all working now and I'm grateful to you all for your assistance

@Deltani

Hi

Good news.

Certainly if the program was hanging up with caching, that would cause issues as nothing in it would get updated correctly, or a unhandled conflict, leading to a crash.

The templates from Movie Edit Pro MX Plus are unlikely to work with the modern versions of MEP. IIRC they have been updated (IIRC) at least once, if not twice, since that version was released with the first update arriving with 2015.

Happy editing

@Deltani

Hi Delrani.

I'm glad you have it sorted and thank you for your explanation of the image earlier.

I have never seen that solution before so I may have learned something today.

I tried it on several programs when launching and like you, I didn't get the "Do you want to reset all preferences to default values?" So I guess something has to be broken for it to show up.

I will keep a copy of that solution though just in case as odd thing sometimes happen when Windows does its updates.

Certainly an interesting resolution to your problem.

Fingers crossed the solution is a permanent one.

Ray.

Hi John.

Looking at the folders the way Deltani did I did see numbers associated with some files that look like dates but turned out to be something else. Not sure what they are but the content files are newer from 2018 onward so I probably brought up a red herring. In fact I can't find any files older than 2018.

@Deltani

Hi,

Once the template has been executed and the files put in the folder, as you showed, try running the same Movie Template again normally after restarting MEP. Success?
