Uploading to YouTube

GeraldLeigh schrieb am 08.05.2019 um 20:24 Uhr

I am looking to upload some videos to YouTube, however I have never actually done this before so am unfamiliar with how it works.

The videos I am looking to upload are in MPEG-2. Does YouTube accept this format? And if so, what do I need to do to ensure the videos are uploaded with the best possible quality?

@GeraldLeigh

If you look here https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en

That page will give you the acceptable file formats and specifications for uploading to YouTube.

Note they are recommendations. That is not to say that other formats may not work if uploaded, but not necessarily work as well. I have no idea if MPEG-2 will work or not but it's a good idea to have a look around YouTube and all of its requirements for video upload before uploading anything. This would mean ploughing your way around and looking at other things you may or may not do, such as copyright problems which may not only be about music but product placement and other possible video image related problems.

[Additional Edit] I found the complete list of acceptable file formats here https://support.google.com/youtube/troubleshooter/2888402?hl=en&ref_topic=9257782

YT will take MPEG 2s but! The secret to good quality YT videos is bitrate/file size! The higher the better. It depends on your patience level (how long are you prepared to wait for the upload/how much data allowance do you have). To that end, MP4 will give you comparable quality as MPEG 2 but the file for uploading will be half the size.

Using MP4, I'd suggest 1280x720 at 4000kbps for HD. Lower quality but still good would be 852x480 (or 640x480 16:9) at around 2000kbps.

Try uploading your MPEG 2 video first. If you've got the patience, let YT do the conversion for you.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi,

The resolution of the videos that I am looking to upload are 704x576 and 720x576 (4:3). Should I still upload in the resolution you recommended? i.e. 852x480?
