Importing HDV via firewire from Canon XH-A1

Steve-Young schrieb am 25.10.2019 um 16:38 Uhr

This is the main reason I purchased your software.  the good people at B&H promised me that it would solve my problem.  But I can't seem to get it to work.  I may need a different driver.  Apparently , the software does not recognize my camera as an HDV camera.  The only way I have been able to import is to select DV as the setting, and the content comes in "letterboxed" in an SD format.  Please help!!!!

I am using MAGIX Movie Edit Pro, version 18.0.1.209 (UDP3), UG Code 8435 KA1

I am using the software on a Windows 7 machine with an internal Firewire card.  (Once I have the video imported, I will transfer it to a windows 10 machine and edit with Adobe Premier.

Thanks in advance,

Steve Young

@Steve-Young

Welcome to the Magix forums.

First, you need to understand these are user to user forums, not Magix Support, so writing about "your software" is incorrect. If you wish to raise a support ticket with Magix Support, please use the Contact button in the footer of every forum page.

Second the current latest version of MEP is 19.0.1.31 so you are actually using the previous full version.

However, I rather suspect the problem you are experiencing may be to do with the Firewire speed. (As a matter of interest I have a Win 10 machine and use FW - with a TI-chipped card - to transfer digital footage to computer, though I've never tried with HD footage.)

I have to admit I would not consider using MEP (which variant, btw, Basic, Plus or Premium?) only to import footage for later transfer to Premier, but that is just me! You will see my computer spec in my signature, and VPX offers me everything I need from a video editor.

Just to be sure (and I apologise if this seems rather "insulting") with MEP open are you pressing on the highlighted red button in this screenshot?

And then on the button highlighted here?

On the screen which then opens, what are your options for "Select DV Device Driver?

Hi Steve.

If Jeff's solution doesn't work

Try setting the project up manually at the beginning with your cameras video file specs. Frame rate, picture size etc. before importing.

Once imported go to file / Settings / Movie, and check the movie is showing correctly including audio sample rate.

Then again, File / Settings / Program. and set the program settings.

Make sure you have the interlace settings ticked

Import your clips for editing.

When exporting you can customize your export settings as well, either by using the appropriate drop-down settings within each box or typing the settings needed.

Make sure you use the correct export file format needed.

These are only example pictures as I do not know your camera specs but if you get everything correct the file should export OK. I also don't know if you need to add effects or titles so not sure how many tracks you want to run, nor do I know your computer specs to know what is possible for your setup.

If I've made a mistake in my instructions I'm sure someone else will step in with the corrections needed, but it helps if the person requesting help gives as much information as possible when requesting help. MEP is a powerful program as most video editing packages are and can need to be set up for individual project needs.

I hope some of this is helpful and at least starts you on your way.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . I may need a different driver.  Apparently , the software does not recognize my camera as an HDV camera. . . . .

Making a few assumptions: -

  • Windows 7 is the 64 bit version
  • Movie Edit Pro is the 64 bit version
  • The drivers for the Firewire card are 32 bit

Then yes you may will need new 64 bit drivers for the Firewire card, before the HDV camera is recognised.

Hi,

You can also use the free utilty HDVsplit which can also perform scene detection and then import it into Movie Edit Pro. Thus little utilty usually solves capture issues for HDV material.

I want to thank everyone who has offered help, and I want you to know that Ihave tried everything that you have suggested. I also contacted Magix technical support and they said that it had to be a problem with the camera itself. After fiddling with the setting for a few days, I discovered the "Factory Reset" option and BOOM everything started working properly! Since then I have been busy uploading all of the content that I had on tape and hope to get some actual work done this week. Thanks again to everyone! - Steve

Great to hear! Thank you very much for updating the thread and giving the solution, even if it was one that, I suspect, none of us would ever have thought of!

Well....... I did suggest there were settings in the camera which needed to be set correctly in the post I linked to!🙃

Yes you did, and I did try every setting that I could think of, but nothing changed until I did the factory reset. Thanks again! Steve
