Hi,
which software do you use? If you use Music Maker you can activate a track for MIDI recording by clicking on the "REC"-icon on the left side of a track. 1 click is audio recording, second click is for MIDI recording.

It would help if we knew which Yamaha keyboard (Model number) and which Magix software you are using.

The model is PSR-K1 and the software is the Magix Music Maker Basic Edition.

Thank you!  That helps alot.  Sorry for the delay, but I was preoccupied with something else yesterday.

First of all, it is important for you to read and understand pages 66 through 79 in your owners's manual.  If you do not have one, you can get a PDF copy here:

http://www.yamaha.co.jp/manual/english/result.php?div_code=emi

Basically, if you only intend to use the PSR-K1 as a MIDI controller, you must connect the keyboard to the computer using the USB cable as instructed. (I'm sure you already knew that.)

Second, you MUST have the USB/MIDI driver installed on the computer.  It is on the CD-ROM that came with your keyboard, assuming you bought it new.  If you do not have it, perhaps someone can send you a copy of the driver.

Then, you MUST make the appropriate changes to the keyboard that will allow you to use it as a MIDI controller as explained on pages 66-69 in the manual.

I have a Yamaha DGX-203 myself, but I've not yet tried to use it with my computer.  If I have the time, perhaps I will give it a try sometime this week.  Good Luck!

I still think this might just be a simple misunderstanding about the workflow for a MIDI recording. Maybe just some minor thing going wrong or setting being incorrect. Below, I will lay down some detailed step-by-step instructions again for setting up the program and performing a MIDI recording. Before you do any of that, make sure your keyboard is properly connected to your system and properly supported by it (e.g. a USB device must be supported by your operating systems and drivers may have to be installed manually).

Start up Music Maker. Open the program settings ("Audio/MIDI tab") by pressing the "P" key on your computer keyboard. Double-check that the proper driver appears in the "Input device" drop-down list under the MIDI section. Now, find the desired VSTi object in the "Synthesizer" tab (e.g. Vita or an external software synth) and drag & drop it up into one of the tracks to create a Midi object. Now the actual Midi Editor will open up, where you can edit the Midi object. You should now (while the Midi Editor is open) be able to hear your input from the keyboard being replayed by the VST instruments you have chosen. You can also change that VST instrument again in the Midi Editor, using the "Instr." drop-down list at the top. Once you're done testing and setting up everything, you can start recording your Midi track.

On a side note: You might want to make sure that your Music Maker is configured to use an ASIO driver to avoid latency related problems. You can change the driver model when you're in the main screen of Music Maker and press "P" on your computer's keyboard to bring up the program settings dialogue. Pick "ASIO driver" under the driver selection in the "Audio playback" section and choose a suitable ASIO driver from the drop-down list below. If your sound hardware doesn't provide ASIO drivers, you can opt for the generic "Magix Low Latency (2008)" driver.

I hope this helps.

Update:

Based on the screen video of the program and configuration process you sent to me and after checking this again, what it boils down to is that this "Basic Edition" of Music Maker you're using just doesn't support MIDI input. You'd have to use a different version of Music Maker or maybe Music Studio:

http://www.magix.com/us/music-maker
http://www.magix.com/us/samplitude-music-studio

In generation 15, Music Maker supports MIDI input both in the classic and in the "Premium" edition. So, either should meet your requirements. You'll find trial versions on the website. Try to apply the instructions I gave above to that newer version. Happy MIDI recording!
