Title Animations

Gevaudan wrote on 2/25/2013, 1:29 PM

Hello I am looking to be able to animate some text to appear in the screen like it is being typed. Is there a way to do this within MAGIX Movie Edit Pro Plus 2013?

I saw a "Typewriter" animation but a) the text is there already from the start and it sort of types over top what is already there. I would like it not there and type in and b)Text customization is not supported in it because it is a 3D effect.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I don't see a built-in typing effect that does that. So I think I'd do what you describe by arranging the successive letters in separate tracks. I'd also place a static block of text on another track, representing the typing that had already been done at the start of the animation.

Hi

@ Terry

It is on the Titles tab, under Movements and behaves exactly as Gevaudan describes.

@ Gevaudan

Terry's method will work however it is only good for short words as each letter uses up a track.

An alternative, which will only use one track, is to create the full title once and then copy and paste it however many times you need for the word/sentence.

Then edit each one in turn deleting the unwanted characters one by one; ie the first title object contains the  1st character, the second the 1st and 2nd character and so on.

Then set the length of the title objects to a short period eg 1/2 sec or 1 sec depending on the speed at which the characters should appear except for the last one which can be set to the length of time you want the full title to stay on screen.

Here is a quick (took 3 minutes to create) example if it does not play correctly in your browser right click the link and select Save link as (Firefox) or the IE, Chrome equivalent, then it will play on your computer.

And here is an image of the timeline - I have indicated the contents of each title object and each is 15 frames long - tha last object is set for a longer time for the the full title to remain on screen.

Because the text is centred in this example it appears to move left as it is typed.  If you do not want this then you can position each title object so the Left setting in Movements, Size and position is the same, the title will then type from the left to right wthout moving.

HTH

John

Hi John,

Neat method! (FF gave me just the QT '?' error icon, so I downloaded.)

By "I don't see a built-in typing effect that does that," I meant the effect Gevaudan wants.

BTW, that 3D effect in MEP seems odd to me. What do you think it is supposed to represent?

Here's a radically different approach to typing:

Hi guys

There is a typewriter effect in the Xara3d part of MEP MX that does what Gevaudan wants. You apply a Xara 3D effect and when the Xara program opens, change the animation effect/style to "Typewriter".

Only problem is that this works in MX but when I try this in 2013 I can not get any Xara 3D effect to apply to the title. It comes up with an error box that says that: -  "The file format of C:\ Program Data\.........\ breathing.x3d can not be read! Please make sure the drive is not full or write protected"

What is that about? I am sure I have seen that error discussed on the forum but as usual, I can not find it by searching. Can you help John or Terry?

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter,

Good find!

I managed to get that working in MEP 2013 (Premium). I've seen that error message you describe, but not this time.

I took a lot longer than I probably should have, mainly because I've rarely used the 3D editor. Is there no quick way to remove all the trimmings (colours, bevels, spinning hoops, outlines, shadows, three sets of lights, etc, etc) and get right back to 'plain' text? I had to use many dialogs to achieve that. And even then it was white text on black, because my black on white turned out grey on black somewhow!

Also, I've lost the dialog where you can change font size in the familar way, i.e. point size. There's a percentage thing labeled Text Size but that appeared to make no difference. I clearly need more exercise to master this!

Here's an example made using the 3D Maker titles in MEP 2013 Premium.

That's basically what I'd have expected the built-in 'Typewriter' effect to do, at least the video track.

Trickiest part was synchronising the sounds. And I had to hunt around a bit for my 'carriage return'.

Thanks Everyone, These are all great suggestions and they will definitely help me figure out how to do it. I am really liking this program as a cheaper alternative to Premiere :)
