Movement Templates: inconsistent behaviour

terrypin wrote on 8/28/2012, 4:01 PM

I wanted to zoom and rotate an image over the background, so I thought I'd use Effects > Movement Templates as a change from rolling my own with KF.

I placed my two still images in track 1 and 2 and selected the track 2 object. Now, I've always assumed that there are two ways of applying an effect:

1. Double click the effect.
2. Drag the effect onto the selected object.

I prefer the first, as it's quickest, so I used that out of habit. But to my surprise I found that failed to work for about 50% of the 60 effects. Instead it applies the effect to the track 1 object, even though that's not selected. For example, Rotate worked as I would expect, a d-click correctly applying the effect to the target. But the one next to it Rotate and zoom failed, applying it to the track 1 non-selected object.

I could give 25-30 other examples of the same behaviour.

IMO, I'd call that a bug, but I'd appreciate others' opinions please.

Anyone able to confirm this apparent bug please?

Hi Terry

I can repeat this with two objects on the timeline , one below the other and selecting the lower one.

It gets more curious if you have three or more objects  on the timeline - select any one and the effect is always applied to the object on track one, select two or more below track 1  it is applied to the selected objects.

Even more curious - if track one is empty above the selected object the Rotate and Zoom preview clip is placed on track 1 but only if one object below is selected. If two or more objects are selected then it is applied to the selected objects.

Definitely a bug - the Rotate and Zoom effect is not recognising a single selected object correctly.

Are you reporting this? If so quote me and my findings as well. and point support to this post.

John

Thanks John, appreciate your making the effort to test so thoroughly.

As mentioned, I believe essentially the same bug applies to about half the effects in Movement Templates - about 30 of them.

I'll report.
